On Mother's Day a number of families took part in the Bunbury Runners Club Junior Half Marathon, an event allowing young children to run along side elite athletes and other mature participants.

The event aligns with the principles of Act Commit Belong promoting both mental, and physical well being - an important focus at the school.

Prior to the day each child accumulated 19kms
by running laps at school. Completing the final 2.1kms on the day allowed them to
share
in the excitement, commitment and achievement of running in the Bunbury Half Marathon.

On Wednesday the younger children are exploring visual arts by using nature, as part of their Big Ideas - Look What I Found. They have been split into three groups, which will use sticks, leaves, gum nuts to help create artistic expressions.

The children have been busy collecting their materials, and then looking, observing, comparing and sorting their collection of nature’s gifts.

The materials are being used directly, as tools to apply different media (e.g. paint) or to help the children visualise patterns and images they can recreate using different media (e.g. collages, drawings, material).

Lisa’s children have started to think about their next Big Ideas (Fit for Life) in a back to front
way. By thinking about the exhibition they are exploring how information can be presented
in a more visual and tactile way.

This has included looking at what data people collect and why, and how these data sets might be relevant to their Big Ideas.  This is helping them to decide on what experiments and surveys might help them collect useful information.

Through this process the children are also learning new mathematical skills, using graphs and charts to make data come to life in an authentic way.

At 9:30am on Monday 30th April Lisa’s children will have their learning exhibition.

The morning is not only about presenting their
Big Idea work, but more importantly the
journey. The children have been involved in
many aspects of planning including deciding
on presentation formats, discussion on the
room layout and how to create an environment that suits their Big Ideas topic of Evolution.

The whole process has given the children a sense of ownership, capability and excitement so come along and help them celebrate their achievements.
