  • Fostering emotional resiliency

The Family Learning Association (FLA) supports Child Side families whom choose to home school through the high school years 8-10. It offers a shared physical space and learning culture based upon the educational principles and practices of social constructivism and Big Picture Education Australia (congruent with the Child Side philosophy). The FLA is liaising with the Manea Senior College (Bunbury) for years 11 and 12, with year 8 to 10 students currently receiving tutoring in core subjects by staff from Manea College. The FLA bases it’s work around personalised learning allowing students to progress at their individual level without boredom, disengagement, or racing through curriculum without understanding.

The FLA shared physical space and learning culture acts like a hub for enrolled FLA families. Four days are offered on-site (Monday through to Thursday) and are currently parent-child based, whereby a parent/carer attends with their child and are supported by other families, willing members of the Child Side community whom have relevant skills and knowledge to offer, and a variety of tutors, mentors and a learning co-coordinator. Fees apply to pay for accessed tutors and to pay for utilities, consumables and resources.

Families are responsible and accountable for their child’s education and for enrolling as home schoolers with the relevant educational department. FLA offers individual educational support within a community context. Whilst the FLA is an entirely separate financial and organisational group it co-exists on-site for the very specific reason of continuity of learning and relationships (Maggie Dent – Lighthouse model).
